How to prepare for IELTS Reading Test? What is the procedure of the test? How many are the question types? All details of the Reading Test are below.


Procedure of the test

  • The Reading part is the next test you encounter on the exam. You are given a question paper and an blank answer sheet.
  • The Listening part takes 60 minutes.
  • Unlike in the Listening Test, there is no extra time at the end for you to transfer your answers. So you have to write all answers on the answer sheet during the 60-minute period.

Structure of the test

There are 3 reading passages with a total of 2,000 to 2,750 words. There are 40 questions based on these reading passages. Each of the three passages has about 10-15 questions.

  • Academic Reading
    The test can be taken from magazines, journals, books, and newspapers. These reading passages have been written for a non-specialist audience so you do not need any specific knowledge about the passage topic.

  • General Training Reading
    The first passage is concerned with social survival. The texts are relevant to basic English language with tasks mainly about asking and providing general factual information.
    The second passage is concerned with training survival. The texts are relevant to the traning context.
    The last passage involves general reading with more complex English usage.

  • True, false, or not given
  • Matching lists
  • Choosing headings for paragraphs

So, read as much as you can. One of the best reading material is English newspapers and magazines. Practice yourself to be able to write summaries, find the topic sentences of each paragraph, guess unknown words, and interpret any picture information.

Also study and remember new vocabulary as much as possible every day. You might play the guessing game of new vocabulary with your IELTS study partners on your free time.
